Love

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our redesigned website and I hope you enjoy it as much as we are. Even my family likes it!

Well you’ve read about my stays at lavish $12,000 Parisian suites and now let me tell you where the homeless from Katrina are, I stayed there too.

A special interview meant flying to Dallas for one or two days and finding a reasonably priced hotel close to downtown proved futile. It was gift market week with other events going on so anything inexpensive was full. Plus I didn’t want to rent a car.

I tried all the sites from Orbitz to Expedia to Hotwire to Hotels.com, individual hotels direct and the convention and visitors bureau for help, nothing. Finally I came up with a Super 8 Motel near Love Field but not as close to DFW my airport but they had rooms at $49 per night with breakfast and were seven or less miles from downtown. I could take a cab that far.

The SuperShuttle to the hotel was $17 and my room was fine, clean and everything worked. Basic motel on the first floor of a large two story complex that included coin operated washers and dryers, an out-door pool and sauna, free shuttle to and from the giant Dallas Market Trade Center. Breakfast was white on white…white bread, cereal, milk not the opulent selections at the Bellmoor in Rehoboth Beach. The only restaurants were at the Sterling Hotel across the way and trust me don’t even bother, a BBQ place I never tried and the snack mart at the gas pumps next door, ideal for those little packs of powder sugar donuts.

The Super 8 desk clerks were superior at helping me out with ideas on transportation and perhaps when someone visits Washington they have similar problems but no one I found that lived here seemed to have a clue on how to find or use any public transportation, not even the city dwellers.

The van driver suggested I take their free shuttle to the Trade Center and then get a cab to downtown. Actually the cab ride was only $8 a real bargain and the driver offered me one of his wife’s homemade samosa's.

In my short visit there were a few people around the motel and in the breakfast room that didn’t quite have the traveler look and on my last day I discovered this Budget 8 is home to a number of Katrina’s homeless. FEMA people were there interviewing to see the status of jobs and permanent housing for them.

Now we were close to the John Carpenter freeway but not one of the Katrina people had a car, you couldn’t cook in your room and there was nothing near by for jobs, entertainment or anything else. I asked one of the desk clerks what was the deal? He said they take a bus into the city to look for apartments, take a bus to buy food but basically are prisoners at this motel, waiting for something to happen.

Another brief discourse on this trip was the wretched and expensive experience of dealing with USAir which I hope to avoid in the future. I book most of my own flights and advise many other people on theirs, we use the internet all the time but some airlines have sites that make success an impossibility and like all things to do with computers there are no gray areas.

My brilliant idea to use 25,000 frequent flyer miles for my ticket hit a snag when I only had 23,800 and had to purchase another 2,000. Interestingly the fee to purchase was almost equal to the cost of the miles. Meanwhile I had the reservation locked on hold at their internet site. I calculated the bought miles would register in time and all would be well. It was and there was plenty of time but my reservation had disappeared. I called reservations and explained the entire scenario and with some airlines in the past they will assist and not charge you a "talking" fee. Not in this case but then dealing with a reservation office outside the US--she would not reveal where they were--may have been part of the issue. I was cut no slack and not only did they charge me $10 for doing the booking but another $50 for booking less than 14 days out. The fees have now exceeded or equaled the cost of the extra miles and creeping close to the cost of a regular ticket.

Launching into one of my better rants, how I wish it had been recorded, my parting words "This airline doesn't care about its customers and doesn't deserve to survive and you'd be wise not to plan on a pension". By the way, the flight was fine and the attendants did great.

Thinking of a Valentine's Getaway? Here are a few ideas to inspire you.

Romance for Valentines Day or Anytime

International House, New Orleans, LA

Lovers are invited to engage in a special ceremony celebrating the alliance of their souls, featuring the richly symbolic spells, charms, and candles associated with New Orleans' colorful local religion of voodoo! We call it "Sanctuary of Love."

International House, New Orleans' first truly boutique hotel, serves as gatekeeper between spirits of love and worldly ceremonies. Inspired by the legendary peristyles and colorful temples well known to Haitian voodoo priestesses, International House has created an intimate setting in which lovers are invited to perform their own special ceremony for the most personal occasion, the alliance between their two souls. On Valentine's Day - or any day one desires - the hotel offers the opportunity to discover the power of a romantic guest experience.

"Sanctuary of Love" features ritual objects and recipes to secure the everlasting commitment and enhance the evening courtship. One of voodoo's hallmarks for love and happiness is the orris root, a natural delicacy that is placed under the tongue while kissing so as to ensure the eternal joining of two souls. Other offerings, given to guests on arrival, include aromatic bath salts and cleansing oils that are presented in a Louisiana artisan's woven basket adorned with colorful ribbons. Calligraphic descriptions and instructions about each item are also included. To further enhance the experience, guests receive soothing oils, a candle, statuette, feather, and a "gris gris" or lucky charm. Each element plays a vital role in the lovers' private ceremony. The Sanctuary of Love experience is available for $249 per evening, based on a two-night stay and includes valet parking. The International House is at 221 Camp Street in New Orleans.

Berlitz: Hide this Spanish Book for Lovers

If you have a friend lusting after one of the 200-million Spanish-speaking individuals throughout the world – or if you just wish to sound like an enticing Latin Lover yourself – now is the time.

In an entertaining, “hands-on” departure from its conventional language-learning books, Berlitz Publishing has just released Hide This Spanish Book for Lovers, a compact hardcover with a price tag of $6.95, perfect for gift-giving. With Valentine’s Day and the season of Spring Fever approaching, what better way to learn Spanish than to use it to engage the attention of one of the more than 41-million Spanish-speaking people in the U.S.?

Directed to teens and twenty-something’s, it covers all the bases from igniting a romance – to kissing – to sex. Providing everything you need to bat your proverbial eyelashes at your Spanish-speaking love target, the book includes pick-up lines, trendy phrases and lots of amusing illustrations. “Hot” words are labeled with a thermometer, indicating just how hot they are (and they are pretty darned hot.)

This tepid little tome has chapters on hooking up lines; sex; u+me 4 ever; sweet talk and breaking up.

Explains Sheryl Olinsky Borg, editorial director, Berlitz Publishing, "When young people learn languages, they want real words and uncensored conversation. This means pull out the stops and provide straightforward words. Words you might overhear during a pick-up. Words you might overhear in a hotel room. Since Berlitz Publishing is 'passionate about language,' we kept the real life passion in the language in this book.”
