Joseph Phelan

Joseph Phelan, the features editor of Artcyclopedia, has a PhD from the University of Toronto, where he studied with Allan Bloom, and the author of The Closing of the American Mind. He has worked as a summer intern for political philosopher and social critic Sydney Hook, as an archivist at the New York Public Library, and as Senior Program Officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the spring of 2004 he spent three months in Baghdad, Iraq working in the Office of the Senior Advisor of Higher Education at the Coalition Provisional Authority. Dr. Phelan currently teaches at aesthetics at the Catholic University of America and in the Graduate School of the University of Maryland University College. He previously taught at the University of Toronto and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

He is a contributing editor and writer for three decades in the multi-volume reference work American Decades: Primary Sources, for which he has written over sixty entries on the visual arts, literature, theatre, film, architecture, fashion, advertising and the media. His articles and book reviews have appeared in the Washington Times, Canadian Review of Books, Courier, Toronto.com and the Claremont Review.
