“Cheap China Town Bus's to NYC”
Joe Phelan, www.artcyclopedia.com
columnist, and I decided to try out the $20 “Chinatown” buses to New
York City for a very quick exhibit update visit and important scientific
research into the similarity of rain drops from one state to another.
Several bus companies operate out of Washington, New York and other
major east coast cities at very inexpensive rates. We took the
Washington Deluxe up on Friday at 8am and returned on Saturday with New
Century Travel at the 6pm departure. Normally $35 roundtrip on the same
line but we weren’t sure about our return time and waited to book it
from New York at the free computer in our Embassy Suites lobby. The ride
was very pleasant – excluding the young woman who held an animated
conversation with one friend after another on her cell phone for the
entire 4 1/2 hours straight. We were very happy to be several rows
behind her and surprised the driver didn’t bring out his duct tape.
I’m really tired of hearing the personal details of stranger’s lives
as they satisfy this insane need to loudly broadcast every boring moment
of their dull existence in every public place possible. One answer is my
new organization SSCP – Snatch and smash cell phones and we’ll have
no annual dues.
The buses of both companies were clean, the ride uneventful, smooth and
fast. We made one stop at the half way point for 10-15 minutes to buy
snacks, coffee and a bathroom break. I would advise you to bring Kleenex
or antibacterial wipes and water as the ride is quite dehydrating and
the public bathrooms leave a lot to be desired. I had also packed trail
mix and those healthful staples – brownies and apples!
New Century showed movies on small video monitors but no head phones so
the sound was fairly unintelligible. As their popularity grows, make use
of each of the company’s reservation service, especially for weekends.
We also had the schedule for Peter Pan – Trailways - Greyhound that
left almost every hour on Saturday night from the NY Port Authority
Terminal at a higher cost of $43 each way.
Get very clear on the pickup and drop off points before you leave.
Walking around any part of Washington DC or any major city dragging a
suitcase at 11pm isn’t the smartest move. Passengers not familiar with
the area in Washington were having a hard time directing in friends to
pick them up. DC is under new construction siege with corners and
landmarks seeming to change on a daily basis.
