Candlelight Evening in historic Cooperstown: On Sunday, December 21, from 3-7 p.m., The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York, will host the 24th annual Candlelight Evening, one of the region's best-loved holiday celebrations. Candlelight Evening is a traditional 19th-century holiday celebration with costumed interpreters, horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling, story telling, centuries-old music and traditionally prepared food and drink. It is held at one of the nation's oldest living-history museums, The Farmers' Museum, which brings to life the challenges and rewards of pre-industrial life in rural America.
During Candlelight Evening, the museum's 1845 Village is decorated in
greenery and illuminated only by hundreds of candles and lamplight, as it
would have been 150+ years ago. Complimentary wassail, warmed in kettles
over campfires, is served, and Saint Nicholas, dressed in historically accurate 19th-century clothing, will be on hand to tell stories and display
19th-century toys from the museum's extensive collection. There is a full
music program scheduled, and children can take part in arts and crafts activities including painting and ornament making.
Candlelight Evening started as a celebration for the Cooperstown community,
but has grown considerably over the last 24 years. We expect over 3,000 to
attend, including people who travel from all over the Northeast and mid-Atlantic just for this event.
In addition to the Farmers Museum, Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. There are many other attractions in the area and a wide selection of hotels, B & B’s, historic Inns and more.
